Race Is Socially Constructed free essay sample
Today race is thought of differently than it ever was before. With so many mixes out there it is almost impossible to guess a personââ¬â¢s race based solely on appearance. Race is not something we can see or even prove scientifically. In modern terms, ââ¬Å"race is a socially constructed category composed of people who share biologically transmitted traits that members of society consider important. â⬠(Farrell 2012). Which means race is something made up by humans to categorize people who share biological traits. In a scientific sense race cannot be proven or even real, however race is still very important. The idea of race is modern; people have not always been categorized in this way. ââ¬Å"Ancient societies did not divide people according to physical differences, but according to religion, status, class, even language. â⬠(web sight activity) Not until people started exploring and moving across seas did they distinguish differences among others and have a need for classification. Today sociologist understand race as a social concept and not a biological fact. For example White Americans are able to choose and pass for what race and ethnic backgrounds they want to claim. The decision to claim Irish American, rather than Irish and French American depends on the situation. During St. Patrickââ¬â¢s Day one might claim to be Irish and not French because the French is irreverent to the situation. This person would be called an optional ethnic because their social situation makes it most convenient to be just Irish. Another example is when parents fill out their childrenââ¬â¢s census ancestry reports. ââ¬Å"Only about 60 percent of the children of English-German marriages are labeled as English-German or German-English. About 15 percent of the children of these parents are simplified to just English, and another 15 percent are reported as just German. The remainder of the children are either not given an ancestry or are described as American. (pg 98 Optional Ethnicites Mary Waters 2004) This shows how easy it is for whites to pass for which ever race is more convenient and it has nothing to do with biology. On the other hand, a black person does not have this luxury. ââ¬Å"In the United States, individuals who are actually ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠by the logic of hypo-descent have attempted to skirt the discriminatory barriers imposed by law and custom by attempting to ââ¬Å" passâ⬠for white. Ironically, these same individuals would not be able to pass for ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠in many Latin American societies. (pg 23 racial formations 2007 michael omi and Howard winant) Since there are so many ideas of black, someone who has even the slightest bit of black in them generally is seen as black and cannot pass for anything else. expand Countries and places all over the world view race differently, this is why race is socially constructed and cannot be proven scientifically. For example ââ¬Å"in many Latin American countries, race is not a meta-concept based on biological categories but rather a classification dependent on time and context. ââ¬Å"the determination and relative salience of race categories depend not on their ââ¬Å"inherentâ⬠nature as physical characteristics but on the historical development of the context in which these categories are valued. Within this framework, the points of social reference in which a given individual operates are important determinants of racial identity. â⬠(pg 59 rethinking the color line 2007 Charles gallagher) This Latin American idea of race coming from language, family history and upbringing pro ves race is socially constructed.

Language as a Peculiarity of Human Geography within the Globalization Human geography regularly referred as the cultural geography encompasses all the human aspects of why certain things happen in certain places. The present essay analyses the language as a peculiarity of human geography. Obviously, the process of globalization influences the current position of t he languages, when the weak one can be lost due to the high level of English languageââ¬â¢s integration. Globalization is one of the major aspects of human geography. In globalization, one can discuss economy, finance, culture, consumption, emerging communication trends and religion. However, this process has its benefits and its effects. On one hand, globalization is the central issue in the world today. This can be illustrated by the emerging business trends globally, for example, the use of the internet to advertise and make sale of goods and services. On the other hand, globalization has affected the economies of various countries, whereby, some countries brain wash others so as to exploit their resources and benefit themselves and their citizens financially. Moreover, globalization has brought heated debates on whether it is more beneficial or hazardous (Aitken 2006, p.10). In case of language, globalization also has its good and bad sides. As the ethnographic setting, langu age is closely related to the social processes within its nation or country. Therefore, the survival of language is depended on the other human sources (ââ¬Å"Language and Globalizationâ⬠). Today, we can be a witness of the competition between the instruments with the same characteristics and functions. All languages serve for the population of speakers. Naturally, English has more benefits of globalization than other world languages. It is the result of the current world economical and political development. English affects all relevant parts of the modern society (ââ¬Å"Language and Globalizationâ⬠). The increasing use of this language in the business and education demonstrates a confident progress. However, we should not forget about the other widely distributed languages. Thus, the continental European languages still show its vitality and functionality. The official meetings of the European Union do not use one official language. It is wrong to suppose that English can be considered as the possible official language within the European Union.Advertising Looking for essay on geography? Let's see if we can help you! In this country, the major and minor languagesââ¬â¢ speakers have the same rights and responses. Country has four official languages such as German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Moreover, the last one is a language of the absolute minority of the citizens. However, it is defended by government as well as the most popular German. Therefore, Switzerland solved the problem of languageââ¬â¢s separation and provided the same rights to its population. It is the most systematic solution that allows save the territori al integrity. The Swiss example can be used by all other countries. Thus, Canada has a bilingual model that includes English and French as the official languages. However, the current situation demonstrates the dominant position of English. Only the local government of Quebec provided the strict laws that indicate the official status of French language. It is obvious that globalization is a cause of weak and powerful languages to be in contact. Weak languages today are in a high risk due to the possibility of its lost. The governments have to provide an adequate policy that can help protecting the national language and developing it. However, as it was mentioned before, globalization is very strong process that involves many parts of social organization. Even if the national counties provide some defensive strategies, it is very difficult to get the positive effects. There are other three major socio-cultural manifestations of globalization, namely: information services, news operat ions and social civilization (Fellmann 1997, p.19). In the past two decades, the use of computers has spread globally in conjunction with the use of electronic mails and social networks through the internet. This has helped people from different regions of the world to share and communicate their opinions on diverse issues that affect their lives. However, this form of technology is only beneficiary to the illiterate and to people who can afford it (Becker 1993, p.23). Spreading of Internet only intensify the process of cultural unification. In conclusion, globalization trends rise as communities revolutionize. However, its supersonic rise can be beneficial or hazardous to a society. The process of globalization leads to the irreversible process and, as the result, some weak languages can be lost, while English becomes an official international language.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Language as a Peculiarity of Human Geography within the Globalization sp ecifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Agnew, John A, David N. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - Essay Example Yet it also finds that few hospitals to date have any such written policies and standards. The paper thus recommends that a more inclusive information system be instilled in the healthcare system such that family members of such threatened patients be presented with the option to witness these procedures. It also recommends that healthcare providers of such procedures, if they feel constrained in any manner by such witnessing, may be assisted to change their viewpoints or overcome their constraints in such a manner that their comfort at work is not compromised by such witnessing. This paper contrives to seek out, from the nursing point of view, whether family presence during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and invasive procedures is really necessary and helpful without being an impedance to the relevant nursing staff. In a life-threatening situation (meriting Code Blue status) where patient breathing stops under unnatural or suspicious circumstances cardiopulmonary resuscitation is applied by the present nursing staff with immediate notification to a physician and the nursing supervisor. The same applies for invasive procedures to a large extent. ... ften find themselves in the midst of an ethical dilemma where, on the one side, there are the family members of patient liable to CPR or invasive procedure and, on the other, those physicians and healthcare professionals applying the resuscitation measures (Nibert, 2005) or invasive procedure measures. There are reports of nurses subjected to such dilemmas conceding that they have received no instructional advice in their training programs to allow them to resolve and mitigate such ethical problems (Nibert, 2005). Thus, this paper's intention to investigate various positions on this issue is deemed important and crucial to dispensation of care to critically-ill patients. Background As early as 1987, Doyle et al, in a pioneering study, decided to allow family presence during CPR at their institution (McClenathan et al, 2002). Since then more studies have proceeded and the research findings, instead of conclusively providing evidence to one side, have added to the present state of controversy where there is no general consensus on whether such family presence during this crucial life-supporting and invasive procedure is either beneficial or essential. In the August 22, 2000, issue of 'Circulation' the American Heart Association published its guidelines for family-witnessed resuscitation procedures (McClenathan et al, 2002). It is also noted that the 'Emergency Nurses Association' has since endorsed family-witnessed CPR and recommend that hospitals develop concomitant policies accordingly (Critchell and Marik, 2007). Other healthcare professional bodies similar to these have followed suit but, to date, there are very few hospitals that have actually and actively e xerted themselves in this direction and set

The Bauhaus Movement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The Bauhaus Movement - Essay Example But in 1945 when the World War II had ended, a pattern of thinking particularly in arts and architecture began to emerge. This was known as the Bauhaus movement. The presence of eminent personalities from arts and architecture like Joseph Albers, Gropius and Mies who supported the movement was an evidence of the movement gaining acceptance by the people at that time. Every movement in history has gone through phases of controversies and criticisms. The Bauhaus movement too, was no such exception. There were obstructions as well as political interferences. But still the Bauhaus movement was successful in providing a direction to a newly incepted art form which was known as the abstract art (Craig, 2001). The Bauhaus movement laid the foundation stone for the art and architecture that was to be used throughout the 20th century The Bauhaus movement- inception During the initial decades of the twentieth century many chaos and destructions were seen. While at the political level socialism and democracy uprooted monarchy, at the scientific level machines and new technology brought in many changes. It was at this time that visual art fused with new ideas and creation emerged. This growing pattern manifested itself in the form of Expressionism (Ryan and Conver, 2003, pp.49-50). In Expressionism form of art, the person or the objects in context were removed using strong contour lines or bold colors. Around 1907, cubism emerged. Cubism was of two forms ââ¬â analytical cubism that derived abstracts from living objects and synthetic cubism, which was more metaphorical of the two, emphasized on representing the essence of the object only. Cubism form of art led to the occurrence of several other art movements like the Dadaism, Futurism and the Bauhaus (Arntson, n.d, p.24). The background The name Bauhaus movement was coined from the name Bauhaus that was a German school of crafts and fine arts in Germany during 1919-1933. It was founded by the Walter Gropius who was a G erman architect in 1919. Post World War II, a movement known as the Bauhausââ¬â¢s movement began that aimed at the liberation and exploration of American art and artists. Prior to that, much of the focus laid on the European form of art with little scope for their American counterparts The European artists were restricted in their expression of art and architecture. Bauhaus movement uprooted these restrictions and offered new arenas for them to explore. But still in its effort to bring in modernism and incorporate new ideas in its art and architecture it faced severe criticisms from both the public as well as the ruling government in those times. The Bauhaus movement occurred in two stages. It made its appearance during 1919-1936 and gained momentum during its second phase (Craig, 2001, p.112). The initial stage laid the foundation for the acceptance of new ideas .This was implicit from the fact that people from the Bauhaus School of Arts were brought in the country to teach and express their ideas. The second phase saw marked improvement over the first phase in the form of establishment of the renowned artist Joseph Albers at the Black Mountain College in North California and its acceptance of the Bauhaus ideology by the German artist Gropius and German American architect Mies (Craig, 2001, pp.35). The influence of de Stijl on the Bauhaus movement The de Stijl was a Dutch artistic movement that occurred in Netherlands. The Guggenheim museumââ¬â¢s article on the de Stijl stated that the de Stijl form of art focused on the usage of geometrical figures like the straight line, the square, the rectangle in asymmetrical combinations and using pure primary colors with black and white (Ryan and Conver, 2003, p.52). The Bauhaus move

Little Prince :: essays research papers
A Fable For Adults -- The Little Prince by Saint-Exupery I guess that among people who have read the book The Little Prince which has an amazing amount of readers around the globe merely second to the Bible, there should be many more grown-ups than children, though the classic tale can be read on many levels and enjoyed by readers of any age. Undoubtedly, it is full of vivid imagery and beautiful illustrations that make it sweet enough for children. However, because of the symbols, metaphors, hidden sentimental atmosphere, especially the tragic ending -- children are used to such sentences as the princess lived happily together with the prince for ever and ever -- and the moral it conveys, teens will not have proper understanding and appreciation of this story. Ià ¡Ã ¯d rather believe that Saint-Exupery had written The Little Prince which is simple yet profound for the adults who still keep childà ¡Ã ¯s hearts. The little prince came from a tiny unknown planet. He had left his beautiful rose, traveled to lots of places, and met all kinds of ridiculous things as well as a wise fox and a pilot the narrator. He was looking for something though he was not aware of it. After all, the little prince learnt life lessons and we adult readers learn more from him. Adults in the Princeà ¡Ã ¯s Eyes Leaving his own planet, one after another, the little prince met a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessmanà ¡Ã and finally he arrived on the earth. All the person he met is either stupid or selfish -- from childrenà ¡Ã ¯s point of view, adults are always hard to understand and they are doing inexplicable things. But it is true! Arenà ¡Ã ¯t we always pursuing empty things such as fame and fortune just as the king who ruled no subjects and the man who was extremely conceited? Arenà ¡Ã ¯t we always trapped in a circle set by ourselves just as the tippler and businessman -- drinking for forgetting drinking, selling stars for making more money to buy stars? Arenà ¡Ã ¯t we always keep working but forget the aim of working just as the geographer? As we are growing up, something much more valuable than money or social status deserts us little by little without our notice. Maybe we will begin to appreciate the simple things in life again and discover the real difference between children and adults after reading this beautiful tale. The Rose and the Fox

Qnt-561 Week 1
Week Four Team Paper xxxxxxxxxxxxxx QNT/561 August 1, 2012 xxxxxxxxx Week 4 Team Paper Best Buy is a company that has 40 years of history with a very accomplished sense of success. In 1966 Best Buy was a small electronics store in that originated in St. Paul Minnesota by Richard Schulze and an acquainted business partner. Considering that technology changes so rapidly, Best Buy has had to transform from just being the little electronics store down the way into a competitive, customer-driven, talent-powered company that emphasizes on pleasing the customers as it pertains to the life of technology. In 1993 Best Buy was recognized as the nationââ¬â¢s second largest electronics retailer and was recognized by Forbes in 2004 as the ââ¬Å"Company of the Year. â⬠However, in 2012 Best Buy had a huge layoff which resulted into 50 store closings. The competitors for Best buy include online stores like Amazon, Buy. com, Tiger direct and various others. Purpose Best Buy stores are locate d throughout the United States and every year additional employees are hired to help staff during the holiday season (known as seasonal staffing and typically runs during holiday season).Higher head count is inefficient and expensive. This poses an organizational dilemma; can sales data be used to identify the appropriate number of temporary employees that need to be hired during the holiday season? Considering the sheer amount of stores that require temporary staffing data will be collected from all its stores and used to identify the staffing needs. Research Design Give the nature of business of Best Buy Quantitative research should be applied. It involves gathering data and then organizes, tabulates, depicts, and describes the data collection (Glass & Hopkins, 1984).The dependent variable that will be looked at is staffing levels. A dependent variable is one that ââ¬Å"is measured, predicted, or otherwise monitored and expected to affected by manipulation of an independent varia bleâ⬠(Cooper & Schindler 2011). Because this data will only be measured once, products sold and staffing levels, a descriptive quantitative design will be utilized. ââ¬Å"For an accurate estimate of the relationship between variables, a descriptive study usually needs a sample of hundreds or even thousands of subjectsâ⬠(The Association for Educational Communications and Technology). The estimate of the relationship is less likely to be biased if you have a high participation rate in a sample selected randomly from a population. Operational Definitions Operational Definitions Variable Definition Data of Interest #1 The number of products sold during the Holiday Season How will it be measured #1 If the product was sold between November 15 and January 5 Data of Interest #2 Number of temporary employees during the Holiday Season How will it be measured #2 If a temporary employee was active after November 15 and inactive after January 15 Sample Data Collection DesignsThere ar e various methods of collecting data such that the information collected can be used to draw inferences about the target population. The sales forecast is the key component for the problem statement and for accuracy it is important to know what consumers prefer over Best Buy. Participation in business surveys is usually voluntary and the quality of the results depends crucially on the willingness of enterprises to co-operate. A promising approach to getting high response rates is to make compliance as painless as possible through good questionnaire design and rotation of respondents. It is also important that the enterprises included in the survey should be convinced that the information they provide will be useful to the enterprises themselves in addition to any use it may have for macro-economic analysis. Conclusion Because the human mind cannot extract the full import of a large mass of raw data, descriptive statistics are very important in reducing the data to manageable form. Wh en in-depth, narrative descriptions of small numbers of cases are involved, the research uses description as a tool to organize data into patterns that emerge during analysis. Those patterns aid the mind in comprehending a qualitative study and its implications.
