New Media Implicated In The Globalization Of Culture Essay Example for Free
New Media Implicated In The Globalization Of Culture Essay The contemporary economics, culture and trade is becoming more and more global with each passing year. The diversity of services, goods and customs that could be spotted only a couple of decades ago in different countries, and even in different states have been becoming less and less noticeable during the last years. The same detergents, cat food, mobile phones etc can be found either on the shelves of the Canadian shops or on Russian and Indian markets. Some say that the process of globalization gave most of the worlds population the opportunity to use the qualitative and relatively inexpensive goods which were previously available only to the dwellers of the countries were they were produced, but the others presume that the process of globalization is destructive for the market, as due to the creation of corporations the smaller businesses go broke, and thus the competition, which leads to the improvement of quality of the goods produced, disappears. The influence of media on the contemporary culture is enormous. Media is what forms our tastes and preferences, it dictates us what to wear, to buy, and even how should be behave in different situations. It is the media that turned the American culture into the consumerist one, as nowadays it dictates that purchasing things is the most convenient and quick way to use the desired social status. Most of the media influences on people are performed through advertising, both direct and indirect one. Media is one of the main means of transferring information among people, and of forming their opinions that is why advertising is so powerful nowadays. à à à à à à à à à à à The specialists say it is media that makes the greatest impact on the globalization of culture and trade all over the world. It is through the media that the same goods are advertised all over the world, and, moreover, the same ideas are propagated. Media creates and sets the standards that are to be followed to be considered up-to date and fashionable. à à à à à à à à à à à à Of course, different people have various opinions on why the effect of advertising on globalization is so powerful. For example, Berger, who wrote Ads, Fads, and Consumer Culture states advertising are a lottery, as it is still that nobody knows what advertisement will be effective and what will not. Berger adds that the advertisement executives believe that they waste half of money, spent on advertisements, but no one knows which half it is. (2000, p.2-3). à à à à à à à à à à à Nowadays media is one of the most powerful instruments of forming the opinions of its consumers. Most of the marketing strategies that exist nowadays are built on the influences of the media. It is the irreplaceable instrument for selling things, the process, on which the globalization is based. Decades ago people bough what they needed and their needs were dictated by their life conditions and financial status. It is nowadays that at first media creates the need in the specific product or group of products in people, and than they purchase the advertised thing. Thanks to the media people no longer buy things they need; they rather buy the attributes of the desired social status. Hirschman (2003) states that core societal values have an important role on advertising production and reception. Thus, to become fashionable, a product has to be promoted emphasizing its contribution to those societal values. à à à à à à à à à à à Today media dictates people not only what they should buy, but also how they should behave, and what should they long for, and those directions are actually the same all over the world. Lindner, the author of the study, which analyzes the images of women in general interest and fashion magazine advertisements, states that: advertisements often contain very subtle clues about gender roles and may operate as socializing agents on several levels. Because advertisements are publicly broadcast, the men and women portrayed are often perceived to represent the whole population, and men and women in the advertisements seem to accept these portrayed behaviors, thereby validating the stereotyped roles. à à à à à à à à à à à Media encourages contemporary people to build a career, and get decent education. It is emphasized in the most contemporary movies, TV shows, and books that to get a decent and well-paid position one has to have all the attributes of the successful person, like luxurious car, expensive costume, and the smallest mobile phone possible. And, as we can note those attributes of wealth and success are the same in the ads and movies that are produced worldwide. In the movies and TV shows all of those accessories seem to spring out of nowhere, they just indicate the status of the personage portrayed. à à à à à à à à à à à It is wonderful how the media succeeds in making various products fashionable. It creates the impression of the product being fashionable by attaching a set of characteristics to it that are evaluated positively in the society. Lets, for example, analyze the phenomenon of the popularity of the designers clothes. If we take a DG dress, worth 10,000$, we will see, it is not much different from one we can buy in the department store for 100$. The designer dress is so expensive because media have been popularizing this trademark for many decades. We can read or hear that this or that movie star was wearing an outfit created by DG, Prada, or Valentino on the Oscar award ceremony, which is broadcasted in most countries of the world, and thus conclude that clothes created by those trademarks are the attributes of rich and successful people, so that its high cost will be justified. à à à à à à à à à à à The advertisements published in the media create the feeling of identification. Jackie Stacey in Star Gazing; Hollywood Cinema and Female Spectatorship states that: â⬠¦the female spectator is addressed as a consumer of images of feminine beauty, and thus as an observer of other women, but also of herself. (1994, p.5). The advertisements worldwide are built using the same principle: the potential buyer should be able to imagine himself or herself in the situation where the model that features the product that is promoted, is depicted in the advertisement. And it is obvious that this strategy is effective everywhere, where it is used. à à à à à à à à à à à William OBarr, an advertising specialist who wrote Culture and the Ad: Exploring Otherness in the World of Advertising, presumes that advertising communicates subliminal messages regarding the social and economic dominance of its target audience. In his opinion advertising agencies are not culturally sensitive (1994. p.111). Byà advertising campaign, the media creates an impression in the potential buyer that after purchasing the advertised product he or she will receive the social and economical status higher, than her present one. Media usually positions the advertised products as a compulsory attribute the members of customers present, or target social group possess. à à à à à à à à à à à In general all the advertising campaign pursue the goal of creating the ideal image of the person, who is a part of the target social group potential customers want to belong to. Thus the media portrays the person, using the advertised product in various situations and settings that the members of the customers target or present social group visit. à à à à à à à à à à à The instruments the contemporary media use to make the products attractive for the customers are much more complicated than they were several decades ago. All of the advertisements that appeared in the newspapers, magazines or on TV forty or fifty years ago displayed the product advertised, and people who used them. Nowadays the situation has changed. Angela Goddard says it is not compulsory for the image to feature people in order to say something about them (2002, p.81). The advertisements shouldnt feature a human all the time. They should rather picture the surroundings and the goals of the person, who is featured. This allows the consumers identification with the one, who uses the product advertised. à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à The mechanism of group identification is one of the most effective instruments media uses in advertising, as people are used to the fact that every social group has its material attributes, and they often share the thought that it is enough to purchase those attributes to gain the membership in the target group. Media promotes this viewpoint by showing distinct differences between the representatives of different social groups. Lets recall how the personages are displayed in the movies and TV shows. After looking at the hero for few minutes we can recognize his/her social status without paying much effort. The differences between social group and classes are hyperbolized by the media, and the material attributes are what indicate those differences. à à à à à à à à à à à Social scientists presume that it is TV that makes one of the most powerful influences on the process of globalization worldwide. Almost every dweller of our country knows, that the TV appeared only several decades ago, and its only for forty or fifty years that almost every American family has a TV set at home. TV has become the greatest entertainment for the children and adults, an imaginary world we can drift to without even using the power of our imagination. The statistics says that television is on for almost 7 hours a day in an average American household. à à à à à à à à à à à No wonder that the appearance of television changed the world a lot, as the division of time in the global society has changed with the appearance of this talking hypnotizing box. Except for reading books, going out or simply talking with the friends and other family members millions of people worldwide just sit and watch TV. The stereotypes, ideals and goals that atr promoted by the TV programs worldwide, are almost the same, as the advertising techniques and goals are. As a result the life in different countries becomes more and more like the contemporary Western standard. à à à à à à à à à à à For now television has become a problem for the educators, parents, and employers. There is no statistics about the quantity of lessons and workdays missed because of the TV, but the numbers are surely, giant. Lets try to see what exactly attracts the American children, teenager and adults to the TV screen. à à à à à à à à à à à Jerzy Kosinski in his book Being There provided a great interpretation for the facts listed. In his book he described the emotions of the person who had seen the outside world only through the glass of the TV screen. By changing the channel he could change himself -the author notes. He could go through phases as garden plants went through phases, but he could change as rapidly, as he wished by twisting the dial backwards and forward. In some cases he could spread out into the screen without stopping. By turning the dial Chance could bring others inside his eyelids. Thus he cam to believe that it was he, Chance, who made himself be. (p.5-6) à à à à à à à à à à à As you can note, switching on the TV set for Chance gave him the sense of power he didnt have in his real life. Chance, like the millions of people worldwide identified himself with the moving figures on the screen, and he felt like he was capable to do something brave and smart, like the TV show and movie heroes did. There were times when people worked hard just for to feel themselves satisfied and valuable in any field they chose, but the TV screen brought an opportunity to get all the set of the positive emotions like love, affection, understanding and satisfaction for the price of one TV set. à à à à à à à à à à à The time that was spent before hand on working, studying, doing something for to provide positive emotions and the feeling of social realization is now spent in front of TV. The emotions, whether positive or negative brought by it became a drug for most of us, as we have unlearned to put the efforts for reaching those conditions and getting those emotions without the help of the blue screen. à à à à à à à à à à à People have always had the archetypes inside their mind, on the subconscious levels, which had been dictating their view on the world and things and people that exist in it. With the appearance of the TV those archetypes had grown and enhanced, as we see a lot of examples of them there, much more than the average 19 century American would see during all of his life. à à à à à à à à à à à The same thing is with stereotyping. Lets recall the reasons for popularity of Chance, the protagonist of Being There. It was just the stereotype millions of Americans shared that the person who talks metaphors (and they took the Chances talking about his garden for metaphors) is clever, and hi/her words are worthy of being noticed. It is the phenomena we can see on the TV screen every day. People there are not very clever, not very attractive or intelligent, at least most of them, but we still take their words for granted they have the authority that makes us listen them and hear what they are saying. Today there are persons that are respected all over the world, and their words are able to change the lives of people in many countries. It became possible only with the development of the contemporary media, as without TV or the Web such aà direct and unaffected spread of information would not have been possible. à à à à à à à à à à à The purpose of this paper is not only examining the advertising techniques the big companies use for to lure more customers to their products. It is rather examining the influences media makes on the globalization of culture and trade that is taking place worldwide. The advertising techniques and strategies employed by the media can be used not only for promoting some products, but also for promoting the specific political regime, the specific lifestyles etc. Media is a very powerful instrument. Nowadays it forms the tastes and opinions of its consumers concerning the clothes, gadgetry, or food they buy, but using it much more meaningful and dangerous things can be promoted. This is a valid reason to put little more attention to the notional filling of the media images and slogans instead of consuming them irrecusably. à à à à à à à à à à à There is no doubt that the new media have a very powerful influence on globalization nowadays. Thanks to the TV and the Web the life of people in different parts of the world becomes more and more alike with each passing year. People develop same ideals, principles and norms, guided by TV shows, movies and ads, while the Internet lets them forget about the thousands of kilometers that separate New-York, Paris, Moscow and Deli. à à à à à à à à à à à People worldwide become more and more alike in all the senses of this word. There is no univocal answer for the question whether it is good or bad, as there are both positive and negative aspects of globalization. Nevertheless, this process is continuing, and it is enhancing with thee development of media. Bibliography KOSINSKI, J. Being There. Grove Press, 1999 QUART, A. Alabama Immigration Law Essay Example for Free
Alabama Immigration Law Essay Policy Analysis I Paper CJA 463 Policy Analysis I Paper The new Alabama Immigration Law has set a new get tough standard for immigration law and policies. The law ââ¬Å"[outlaws illegal immigrants from receiving any state or local public benefits, bars them from enrolling in or attending public colleges, and prohibits them from applying for or soliciting work]â⬠. (Fausset,à para. 11) The Alabama Immigration Law also forbids the harboring and transport of illegal immigrants. The law also outlaws them from knowingly renting any type of facility or property and does not allow them to work any where in the sate. If a company has an illegal person on their payroll then it makes it an illegal practice to not hire a legal resident. A big issue that has come up in many debates is the fact that schools now have to verify the legality of students in their schools. It does not ban students from attending the school but it does require that the schools keep a report and send it in to the state board of education. Another issue is that the police department must detain any person that can no provide documentation of being a United States Citizen. The Governor of Alabama, Robert Bentley, initiated this bill into congress and it was passed. The bill takes effect on September 1st 2011. Opponents of the bill state that it is unconstitutional. Some of them even saying that it is going back to the pre civil rights era. People are afraid that students will be afraid to attend school in case they are found out to be illegal. If they are found to be illegal then their parents and family could be kicked out of their home, fired from their jobs and they could lose any benefits that they may have making it impossible for them to live. The fear is also that they will be harassed by other kids at the school making it hard for them to attend and learn. The constitutional issue that arises is the discrimination factor. Illegal immigrants are being discriminated against because of their background. It is against the constitution to do that. This has many people angry and looking to overturn the laws in Alabama because of this. This law is more of a regulatory policy because the government of Alabama passed the law to ban illegal immigrants from the state and the laws to enact this ban are going to be taken into effect. The policies and laws surrounding this new act will affect many people and organizations. The illegal immigrants are going to be affected but the police department will have to make a special unit to handle the illegal immigrants or the suspected illegal immigrants that are stopped and detained. This will cost the taxpayers more money and will cost the police department more money because they will have to build bigger facilities, hire more work force and ensure that everyone is multilingual that works on these task forces. Those that do not have the funds to build bigger holding facilities will have to incur the costs to transport the illegal immigrants to other facilities within the state to hold until another unit comes in and verifies their status. The schools will have to hire a whole team that counts and ensures legal status for all children in the school. This unit would need to be multilingual to help with the needs of the illegal immigrant children and to ensure they knew what to do with these statistics. The school system will incur many costs because the unit will have to research and prepare a report stating their findings to the state board of education in Alabama. The state as a whole will be affected because employers will be afraid to hire anyone that does not ââ¬Å"lookâ⬠American. The employers have to hire another set of employees just to handle the paperwork involved in the e-verify system and to ensure all of their employees are legally authorized to work in the United States. This will cost the employers more money and will leave them little to no room to give incentive raises or merit based raises because of the new jobs this will entail. When new jobs are added, more taxes and insurance is required causing some places to maybe even shut their doors.

Internet and Web Services
Internet and Web Services The internet is a medium with which we can view information from anywhere in the world. Documents from the World Wide Web and various other services such as instant chat, email are available through the internet. The internet has revolutionized communication and there by its contribution of information sharing. With access to computer and an appropriate connection, anyone can interact with others worldwide. However, the web is designed to exchange unstructured information, while people can read web pages and understand their maning, computers cannot. If corporations want to conduct business over the web, humans have to be involves unless there is a way for computers to communicate on their own. Web services in Information System: Web services play a complementary and dominate role in building global information system for todays dynamic usiness world. Web services are self contained, modular applications that can be describe, published,located and invoked over a network. Web services performs functions using ranging from simple requests to complicated business processes. The idea of web services is to leavrage the advantage of the web as a platform to apply it to the services themselves, not just to the static information. Services refer to components and the services offered that can be used to build larger application services. Web services make it easier to bulid service based architectures without the applications being locked-in to a particular software vendors product. Web services have been proven to give a strong return on investors(RIO) and make computer based information system more adaptable. They also help bring productivity, flexibility,and low maintence cost in the ddevelopement of information system by integring components from various third party vendors product. Benefits of web services for developing information security of global nature are:- Web services tools are available for most computer system, including mainframes and packaged applications. This means that not only the exisiting application can be retained, but also the exisinting knowledge of staff can be applied and extended using web services for business integration. Web services are adaptable and can handle changes more readily than other integration solutions, because they use structured text as message format. IT managers now have the ability to exchange data between most application, on most computers in a consistent and standard way. Q:-2.How do distributed information systems help the global enterprises? Solution:- Distributed development of software and information systems (also named Global Software Development) becomes increasingly common, driven by the globalisation of companies and their business and enabled by new information and communication technologies. Distributed Information Systems Development (DISD) promotes realisation of IS in a collaborative way where several partners, generally situated in distant places, participate in the elaboration of a common solution. The DISD consists in decomposingà the IS development process into more or les autonomous phases to be realised by these partners. DISD aims at increasing enterprise productivity, reducing IS development cost, and enlarging the number of human competencies and skills, which allows not only to share experiences in different cultural environments but also to extend enterprise strategy to the global market. In fact, this kind of practice allows enterprises to deal with new economic globalisation constraints that they have to undergo but it is not devoid of problems. It is clear that the distribution of processes has an impact on the way the IS products will bespecified, designed, coded and delivered to the clients. A sophisticated computer information system enables companies to monitor employees, to keep managers and employees informed, to coordinate activities among divisions, or even to sell their products to customers via the internet. Moreover, in the era of it like this, information has become valuable organizational asset just like human resources and inventories. Furthermore, a good information system can facilitate direct communication between firm and suppliers, manufacturers, dealers, and marketers. Together, they can create a value chain as though they were in one organization. In the meantime, the widespread use of information freeway is inviting unwelcome threats. Today, companies are plagued by hackers; competitors, thieves, spies, hired agents, or even from disgruntled employees. Therefore, firms have taken measures to safeguard their system such as installing complex computer firewalls to detect hackers or purchasing expensive and advance encryption software. In conclusion, information system enables companies to react, respond, cater, store, retrieve, disseminate, and control their new valuable asset that is information. In the years to come, a good information system within a company will be no longer an option; it will become a compulsory in determining success. Q:-3 Briefly describe about the information level threats versus Network level threats? Solution:- A threat is a possible event that can harm an information system. Information level threats:- Image SPAM ISLEVEL Image-based SPAM has increased in the past year, and a higher percentage is making it past SPAM filters. The reason this happens is the images are varied each time a message is sent out. SPAM images are just slightly changed each time the message is sent. The difference may be a change in the border, or the variance of one pixel, but the change is enough to get past traditional content and signature-scanning filters. These SPAM messages are compared to snowflakes, because each one looks similar, but is different. Every image is in fact unique, but from a distance it will look identical. Chat Clients ISLEVEL Internet chat applications, such as instant messaging applications and Internet Relay Chat (IRC) networks, provide a mechanism for information to be transmitted bi-directionally between computers on the Internet. Chat clients provide groups of individuals with the means to exchange dialog, web URLs, and in many cases, files of any type. Because many chat clients allow for the exchange of executable code, they present risks similar to those of email clients. As with e-mail clients, care should be taken to limit the chat clients ability to execute downloaded files. As always, you should be wary of exchanging files with unknown parties. Network level threats:- Denial of Service Attack (DOS Attack) NLEVEL Another form of attack is called a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. This type of attack causes your computer to crash or to become so busy processing data that you are unable to use it. In most cases, the latest patches will prevent the attack. It is important to note that in addition to being the target of a DoS attack, it is possible for your computer to be used as a participant in a denial-of-service attack on another system. Trojan Horse Programs NLEVEL Trojan horse programs are a common way for intruders to trick you (sometimes referred to as social engineering) into installing back door programs. These can allow intruders easy access to your computer without your knowledge, change your system configurations, or infect your computer with a computer virus. Part B Q:-4 How the security challenges presented by mobile devices and information systems access in wireless computing environments? Solution:- Today, incredible advances are being made for mobile devices, the trend is for smaller devices and more processing power. A few years ago,the choice was betweena wireless phone and a simple PDA. Now there is a long list of options ranging from high end PDAs with integrated wireless modems down to small phones with wireless web browser capibiliies. Even the simplest of handheld devices provide enough computing power to run small applications, play games, music and make voice calls. A key drier for the ggrowt of mibile solutions for business is the proliferation of handheld devices in the enterprise. Since the term mobile device includes many products. Wireless refers to the metode of transferring information between a computing device, such as a PDA and the data source, such as an agency database server, without a physical connection. Not all wireless technologies are mobile. For example, lasers are used in wireless data transfer between buildings, but cannot be used in mobile communication at this time. Mobile simply decribes acomputing device that is not restricted to a desktop, that is not tethered. Mobile computing does not necessary require wireless communicaton. In fact, it may not require communication between devices at all. Tus, while wireless is a subset of mobile, in most cases, an application can be mobile without being wireless. Smart handhelds are defined as handheld or pocket size devices that connect to a wireless or cellular network, and can have software installed on them. This includes networked PDAs and smart phones. Q:-5 What is the role of Information Security Scenario in the financial sector? Solution:- In the financial sector, the Reserve Bank of India(RBI) has created a comprehensive document that lays down a number of security related guidelines and strategies for banks to follow in order to offer internet banking. the guidelines broadly talk about the types of risks associated with the internet banking, the technology and security standards, legal issues involved and regularity and supervisory concerns. Any bank that wants to offer internet banking must follow these guidelines. Recent infosec surveys indicate that the banking and finance sector companies, most serious about security, are the major investors in security solutions, and regularly revise their ssecurity policies following periodic audits. The software service companies, business process outsourcing (BPO) firms and IT- enabled service companies. However, verticals such as manufacturing continue to lag, except the companies that have extensive enterprise resource planning (ERP) setups or those that drive their supply chain through the web. Aside from these three verticals, companies in other verticals have along way to go in establishing InfoSec.

Why Write Reports? Essay -- Writing
Have you ever felt irritated or discouraged when asked to write a report? Do we do report writing because of some bureaucratic regulation? We would rather do the ââ¬Ërealââ¬â¢ work by recruiting workers and training them besides organizing meetings instead of the boring writing. Function of the introduction is to state clearly the reasons for discussing the particular subject. Just why was the report written? This is to indicate the importance of the subject to the reader, relate the report to previous and similar work, and to make the objectives clear. The extent to which background is given depends largely on the type of paper being written. Often a few, references are available to tie the new work to what preceded it and to the few studies that it touches immediately and directly. Summary papers that establish stepping stones in the advance of a field help relate increments to the background. Function of introduction is to lay out the organization that will be followed in the report. Just how is your subject going to be discussed? We should give the readers a peek to what to do; furnish them an itinerary. Meanwhile for the style of the Introduction is to construct the first, or theme, sentence so that we can capture the attention and immediately focused on the precise subject to be treated besides, on the method of approach. Again, keep your readers' viewpoint uppermost in mind. The ease of writing this sentence is in direct proportion to the clarity of the subject being presented. Where you have a clean-cut, definite accomplishment to report, the theme can be stated easily. But if the work has wobbled and wandered the theme can be stated only with great difficulty. Keep in mind about the remarks about the ease or di... ...e told in the report: what it is about, why it is being told, and how it will be told. Write continuously without breaking the flow of ideas and clear understanding. Then criticize and revise the finished report. Some writers may need to rewrite the Introduction and the theme sentence several times. This is essential to make a good report because it is undeniable that to rate a good report, it shall start from the introduction itself. Just like a thick novel, a reader will read the synopsis or introduction first and buy whichever book that succeeds in catching their attention. The Inappropriateness of Cloning :: Argumentative Persuasive Essays
The Inappropriateness of Cloning December 1998, researchers at Kyunghee University in South Korea claimed to have produced the world's first human embryo clone. The scientists involved said they destroyed the object soon after seeing it divide several times. ACT itself claimed in the November of that year that it had fused the genetic material from a human cell with the empty egg from a cow to make a hybrid embryo. If ACT do succeed in producing full human blastocysts then the feasibility of therapeutic and reproductive cloning would be substantially increased. How is that for word choice? Genetically identical stem cells could potentially be created to cure degenerative diseases (therapeutic cloning), and certain infertile couples could finally choose to conceive a genetically Related child (reproductive cloning). While both procedures are somewhat controversial, the substantial benefits for the patients and potential parents could be argued to outweigh the ethical cost of actual human cloning. Some of the benefits of human cloning are Rejuvenation. Dr. Richard Seed, one of the leading proponents of human cloning technology, suggests that it may someday be possible to reverse the aging process because of what we learn from cloning. Human cloning technology could be used to reverse heart attacks. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged. Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States and several other industrialized countries. These things will help the world in need, but what will be the circumstances? Human cloning is one of the world's biggest issues today. With everything being said like, human cloning could drop the aging process and that it could keep the world going for many more years. Maybe the worlds not suppose to be like that. Isn't that why god created humans the way he did for a reason. Human cloning is doing nothing for the economy except taking tax money for their experiments. Human Cloning is doing something that is really not expectable in our society today. Is human cloning really needed, or is it just something to spend millions of dollars on? That is the question most people are asking today. Scientist still today cannot give the world a legitimate reason why human cloning is needed or necessary. The people who are against human cloning need to come forward and help do something about it.

cloning :: essays research papers
Introduction The possibility of human cloning, raised when Scottish scientists at Roslin Institute created the much-celebrated sheep "Dolly" (Nature 385, 810-13, 1997), aroused worldwide interest and concern because of its scientific and ethical implications. The feat, cited by Science magazine as the breakthrough of 1997, also generated uncertainty over the meaning of "cloning" --an umbrella term traditionally used by scientists to describe different processes for duplicating biological material. What is cloning? Are there different types of cloning? When the media report on cloning in the news, they are usually talking about only one type called reproductive cloning. There are different types of cloning however, and cloning technologies can be used for other purposes besides producing the genetic twin of another organism. A basic understanding of the different types of cloning is key to taking an informed stance on current public policy issues and making the best possible personal decisions. The following three types of cloning technologies will be discussed: (1) recombinant DNA technology or DNA cloning, (2) reproductive cloning, and (3) therapeutic cloning. Recombinant DNA Technology or DNA Cloning The terms "recombinant DNA technology," "DNA cloning," "molecular cloning,"or "gene cloning" all refer to the same process: the transfer of a DNA fragment of interest from one organism to a self-replicating genetic element such as a bacterial plasmid. The DNA of interest can then be propagated in a foreign host cell. This technology has been around since the 1970s, and it has become a common practice in molecular biology labs today. Scientists studying a particular gene often use bacterial plasmids to generate multiple copies of the same gene. Plasmids are self-replicating extra-chromosomal circular DNA molecules, distinct from the normal bacterial genome (see image to the right). Plasmids and other types of cloning vectors are used by Human Genome Project researchers to copy genes and other pieces of chromosomes to generate enough identical material for further study. To "clone a gene," a DNA fragment containing the gene of interest is isolated from chromosomal DNA using restriction enzymes and then united with a plasmid that has been cut with the same restriction enzymes. When the fragment of chromosomal DNA is joined with its cloning vector in the lab, it is called a "recombinant DNA molecule." Following introduction into suitable host cells, the recombinant DNA can then be reproduced along with the host cell DNA. See a diagram depicting this process. Plasmids can carry up to 20,000 bp of foreign DNA. cloning :: essays research papers Introduction The possibility of human cloning, raised when Scottish scientists at Roslin Institute created the much-celebrated sheep "Dolly" (Nature 385, 810-13, 1997), aroused worldwide interest and concern because of its scientific and ethical implications.

Pros and Cons of Probation and Parole Essay
1. What are the competing expectations for probation and parole are often made scapegoats? Americans want greater protection from crime while insisting that efforts to afford this protection do not jeopardize treasured constitutional rights. We want a system that deters would be miscreants an incapacitates those not deterred without imposing significant tax dollars . 3.How does the abolition of parole release impact on probation? the abolishing of parole may increase the number of people on probation, for example Virgina abolished parole release in 1995 and the number of persons placed on probation more then double. 5. Why can criminal justice in the United States be referred to as a system that is not systematic? There is a lack of joint planning and budgeting, or even systematic consultation, among the various agencies responsible for criminal justice. 7.Why canââ¬â¢t it be determined whether a probationer or parolee has been rehabilitated by the absence of a new conviction? Consider that most reported crimes do not result in an arrest and conviction, futhermore, national crime victimization surveys reveal that most crimes are simply not reported to the police. 9. How did the classical concept of a social contract challenge disparate justice? The disparate practices of meeting out justice were forcefully challenged in the eighteenth century with the advent of classicalism. During this era, philosophers, such as Montesquieu and Voltaire, spoke out aganist the French penal code and inhumane and ineqitable punishments. Jean Rousseau and Cesare Beccaria argued for a radical concept of justice based on equality. At a time when laws and law enforcement were unjust and disparate and punishments was often brultal, they demanded justice based on equality and punishment that was humane and proportionate to the offence. 11. How does neoclassicalism in criminal justice differ from classicalism? classicalism argued that law should respect neither rank nor station-all men are created equal-and punishment should be meted out with a perfect uniformity and in proportion to the offense. Neoclassicalism differs from classicalism because it maintains the basic belief in free will while paving the way for entry of mitigation into criminal justice by considering three areas, past criminal record, insanity and retardation, and age. Punishment can be justified only if crime is freely chosen, intentional, and rational. 13. How does determinism conflict with the concept of punishment? Punishment can be justified only if crime is freely chosen, intentional, and rational. Determinism conflicts with this because determinism suggest a lack of choice, particularly the belief that oneââ¬â¢s behavior is ââ¬Å"determinedâ⬠by physiological or psychological variables. 15. How does the standard of evidence in a criminal trial differ from that of a probation or parole revocation hearing? Every jury is told that the facts pointing to the guilt of the defendent must be established beyond reasonable doubt, as opposed to the preponderance of the evidence, which is the standard in the civil and some juvenile cases as well as probation and parole revocation hearings. 17. What are the sources of information for the preparation of presentence report? the source of information comes from court records, examine other reports, such as psychiatric and school records; and interview the defendent, spouse, employer, arresting officer, and victim. information from from the presentence investigation will be prepared in the from of a written preparation of presentence report.
